September 2021 Meeting

This Meeting:

Trifun Vusovic

Project/Contract Manager, Transport for NSW
to discuss

VICTORIA BRIDGE UPGRADE

Transport for NSW is upgrading the historic Victoria Bridge over Stonequarry Creek, Picton.

Stage 2 has commenced and can only be completed with a full 24/7 closure of the bridge and Prince Street to traffic.

We will be joined by an officer of Transport for New South Wales, Trifun Vusovic, who will update members about the upgrade.

This heritage listed bridge was designed by Percy Allan and opened on 7 October 1897. It features the tallest trusses in New South Wales and is one of the oldest surviving bridges of its type.

Elements of the bridge, including the top timber chord and supports under the bridge, have significantly deteriorated over time and rehabilitation is essential to maintain the safety and reliability of the heritage listed bridge and ensure its continued operation.

Stage 1 of the rehabilitation work was completed in early May 2021. They replaced the timber top chord structure and installed temporary supports under the bridge. Work beneath the bridge was also completed to improve support and prevent further deterioration of the structure. During the first stage of rehabilitation, the bridge was closed to traffic during the day and reopened after work hours, while maintaining the ability to reopen the bridge quickly in the event of an emergency.

The second stage of rehabilitation work will start from will take up to four months, weather permitting. Stage 2 can only be completed with a full 24/7 closure of the bridge and Prince Street to traffic. Pedestrian access will be maintained during the work. The full closure will allow them to replace the timber support structure beneath the western end of the bridge with concrete. Transport for NSW  investigated different options to carry out the work efficiently while providing a safe environment for motorists and workers. But the location presents a unique space that restricts site compounds, parking and work space. It is not possible to carry out this work while Prince Street and the bridge are open to traffic. Stage 2 has been scheduled for completion outside of bushfire season.
