June 2021 Meeting

By 19/06/2021August 11th, 2021No Comments

It is with regret that The Chamber informs members and the public that tonight’s meeting at Vabys Restaurant is canceled.

Announcements and new regulations issued by NSW Health this afternoon deem it difficult to hold the event and maintain the necessary restrictions.

This Meeting:

Transport for New South Wales

Transport for NSW is upgrading the historic Victoria Bridge over Stonequarry Creek, Picton. Monday 21 June 2021 and will take up to four months to complete, weather permitting.

Stage 2 is about to commence and can only be completed with a full 24/7 closure of the bridge and Prince Street to traffic.

The speaker for this meeting will be an officer of Transport for New South Wales who will update members and guests about the upgrade.

This heritage listed bridge was designed by Percy Allan and opened on 7 October 1897. It features the tallest trusses in New South Wales and is one of the oldest surviving bridges of its type.

Elements of the bridge, including the top timber chord and supports under the bridge, have significantly deteriorated over time and rehabilitation is essential to maintain the safety and reliability of the heritage listed bridge and ensure its continued operation.

Stage 1 of the rehabilitation work was completed in early May 2021. They replaced the timber top chord structure and installed temporary supports under the bridge. Work beneath the bridge was also completed to improve support and prevent further deterioration of the structure. During the first stage of rehabilitation the bridge was closed to traffic during the day and reopened after work hours, while maintaining the ability to reopen the bridge quickly in the event of an emergency.

The second stage of rehabilitation work will start from Monday 21 June 2021 and will take up to four months, weather permitting. Stage 2 can only be completed with a full 24/7 closure of the bridge and Prince Street to traffic. Pedestrian access will be maintained during the work. The full closure will allow them to replace the timber support structure beneath the western end of the bridge with concrete. Transport for NSW  investigated different options to carry out the work efficiently while providing a safe environment for motorists and workers. But the location presents a unique space that restricts site compounds, parking and work space. It is not possible to carry out this work while Prince Street and the bridge are open to traffic. Stage 2 has been scheduled for completion outside of bushfire season.
