Member of the Legislative Assembly Member for Maitland Shadow Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, Shadow Minister for Small Business Member of the Australian Labor Party
It was great to see the large attendance at the October Chamber of Commerce meeting of over 30 members and guests.
After formal Chamber business and a light snack, Ren Moolhuyzen from That Business Place spoke on the necessity for businesses to have a well established backup plan for their computer databases and accounting software. Ren and other members recounted stories of businesses having recently been affected by encryption malware which shut down their entire computer networks and encrypted all their files. Ren reiterated the need to have an up-to-date functioning backup process with the ability to reestablish key components of the business. Ren believes the malware currently being distributed via email attachments has the capacity to closed businesses for good.
The guest speaker for the night was Jennifer Aitchinson MP, the member for Maitland.
Ms Aitchinson spoke about her business career and how she is able to use her experience to speak up in parliament and other areas on our behalf. Some of the topics discussed were how new legislation pertaining to gift cards effect businesses, changes to penalty rates for workers and businesses and how Labor views the privatisation of public assets.
Jennifer was accompanied by local Labor supporters who had joined her on a fact-finding tour of the shire speaking to business owners in Picton and adjoining towns.
The Picton Chamber of Commerce thank the member for Maitland for her visit and extend our well-wishers to her electorate.
